正面铭文 REPUBBLICA ITALIANA C. MOMONI
(Translation: Italian Republic)
背面描述 The reverse presents an allegorical composition representing global telephonic communication: stylized electrical signals and optical fiber vortices radiate dynamically around a terrestrial globe positioned in the upper-left field, symbolizing Meucci's pioneering contributions to telecommunications. The denomination 5 EURO is inscribed in the central field within the vortex design, flanked by the Rome Mint mark R. The commemorative dates 1808 2008, marking the bicentennial of Meucci's birth, are enclosed within a square frame in the lower field beneath the globe. The inventor's name ANTONIO MEUCCI appears prominently in the legend.

附加信息

Issued to commemorate the centenary of Meucci's death, this coin arrived three years after the U.S. Congress passed House Resolution 269 in 2002, formally recognizing Meucci's role in developing the telephone ahead of Alexander Graham Bell's 1876 patent. The Italian government had long championed that cause, and this commemorative was part of a broader cultural effort to cement that recognition in public memory.

Meucci filed a caveat — not a full patent — with the U.S. Patent Office in 1871, which lapsed in 1874 when he could not afford the $10 renewal fee.
