Additional information

Anagni, a hill town southeast of Rome, was the site of one of the most dramatic confrontations between papal and secular power in medieval history. In 1303, agents of Philip IV of France seized Pope Boniface VIII there in what became known as the "Schiaffo di Anagni" — the Slap of Anagni — an act so shocking it reverberated through European politics for decades and effectively ended the high medieval papacy's claims to universal temporal authority.

This coin was issued as part of Italy's ongoing UNESCO World Heritage commemorative program. Anagni's medieval episcopal complex was recognized for its exceptional Romanesque architecture and intact 13th-century fresco cycles.
