Xutos & Pontapés formed in Lisbon in 1978 and became one of the defining bands of the Portuguese punk and rock scene, their rise coinciding almost exactly with the country's post-Carnation Revolution cultural opening. The INCM has issued a series of collector coins honoring Portuguese popular music figures, and this piece falls within that program.
Bassist and frontman Rui Reininho is not in the band — that distinction belongs to vocalist Tim, who died in 2019. The band continued performing afterward, a point of some public debate in Portugal.
