Issued as part of Italy's ongoing "Eccellenze Italiane" collector series, this coin commemorates the Venetian sculptor Antonio Canova (1757–1822) in the bicentenary year of his death. Canova essentially defined Neoclassical sculpture across Europe, and his workshop in Rome attracted patronage from Napoleon, the papacy, and virtually every ruling house on the continent simultaneously — a commercial and artistic monopoly with few parallels in art history.
The Zecca Roma struck this as a limited collector issue, not intended for circulation.
