| 正面描述 | Bare-headed effigy of King George I facing right, rendered in high relief with fine neoclassical detailing characteristic of the Barre workshop. The king's hair is closely cropped and naturalistically modeled. The circular legend ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ Α! ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΩΝ (George I, King of the Greeks) runs along the upper periphery, with the engraver's signature ΒΑΡΡΕ Α (BARRE A) inscribed in the lower field beneath the portrait. The border is composed of a uniform beaded rim. |

Greece adopted the Latin Monetary Union standard in 1868, binding the drachma to the franc at parity and obligating Athens to strike gold coinage conforming to LMU specifications. The 5-drachmai piece was the smallest gold denomination in that system, functionally equivalent to the French 5-franc gold coin. Production was intermittent — Greece's finances were chronically strained throughout the 1870s, and the government's ability to maintain specie reserves sufficient for gold coinage was never guaranteed.
The 1876 issue was struck at Paris, as Greek domestic minting capacity could not handle gold at this specification.
