The king's hair is closely cropped and naturalistically modeled. The circular legend ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ Α! ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΩΝ (George I, King of the Greeks) runs along the upper periphery, with the engraver's signature ΒΑΡΡΕ Α (BARRE A) inscribed in the lower field beneath the portrait. The border is composed of a uniform beaded rim.

Reverse description An open laurel wreath, tied at the base with a ribbon bow, frames the central field. Within the wreath, the denomination 5 ΔΡΑΧΜΑΙ (5 Drachmai) is inscribed in two lines, with the date 1876 below. The legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΙΟΝ ΤΗΣ ΕΛΛΑΔΟΣ (Kingdom of Greece) runs along the upper periphery, interrupted at each side by the wreath branches. Small decorative stars flank the base of the wreath, and a uniform beaded rim encircles the entire design.
