Liberia's 1990s wildlife coinage series was aimed squarely at the collector market, produced in bulk by foreign mints and bearing little relation to domestic monetary circulation. These pieces were legal tender in name only — the face value was nominal against production cost, and virtually none entered everyday use in Monrovia.
KM#581 was struck during one of the most turbulent periods in Liberian history, with the First Liberian Civil War having only recently concluded under the Abuja Accords of 1996.
