Obverse description The central field displays the full Coat of Arms of the Republic of Liberia, featuring a shield bearing a sailing ship at sea, a palm tree, and a rising sun, supported by laurel branches and surmounted by a dove in flight. A ribbon scroll across the shield bears the national motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE. Additional information

Liberia's 1990s commemorative program was frankly a commercial operation — the country issued dozens of foreign-themed five-dollar pieces through this period, licensed through overseas distributors targeting collector markets in Europe and North America. Diana died in Paris on August 31, 1997, and the subsequent flood of memorial issues from non-Commonwealth nations like Liberia were struck and distributed within months of her death, timed entirely to market demand rather than any diplomatic or historical connection to the subject.
