| Obverse description | The national coat of arms of Liberia is prominently displayed at centre, featuring a shield bearing a sailing ship at sea, a palm tree, and a rising sun, surmounted by a scroll inscribed with the national motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE. The shield is flanked by laurel branches and supported by a dove in flight at upper left. The date 1997 flanks the arms to either side, and the denomination 5 DOLLARS appears in the lower legend. The circular outer legend reads REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA, with a secondary inscription REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA also appearing on the scroll beneath the shield. |

Liberia's commemorative program in the 1990s produced a flood of celebrity and event coins with no connection to the country's own history or monetary needs — this piece is a product of that market, struck for the international collector trade within weeks of Diana's death in August 1997. The speed of production was commercial, not ceremonial.
