| Obverse description | The obverse displays the coat of arms of the Republic of Liberia at centre, featuring a shield bearing a three-masted sailing ship at sea, a palm tree, and a rising sun, surmounted by a dove in flight and flanked by crossed implements below. The shield is surrounded by a wreath, with a scroll at base inscribed REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA. A ribbon above the shield bears the national motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE. The date 1997 appears to either side of the arms within the field, and the denomination 5 DOLLARS is inscribed along the lower rim. The outer legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs around the upper periphery, separated from the inner device by a beaded border. |

| Additional information |
Liberia's central bank issued a long run of commemorative crown-sized pieces through the 1990s aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation, licensing royal and celebrity subjects with little connection to the country. This Diana engagement piece appeared in 1997, the year of her death, which dramatically spiked demand for the entire category and left dealers briefly unable to keep similar issues in stock.
