背面描述 Central bust of Vincent van Gogh facing slightly left, wearing a broad-brimmed hat and a loosely draped jacket with a beard and mustache, rendered in fine detail in high relief. Surrounding the portrait is a stylized decorative background of swirling brushstroke motifs evoking van Gogh's distinctive Post-Impressionist painting style. The legend VINCENT VAN GOGH arcs along the upper field, with the birth year 1853 at the left and death year 1890 at the right. The denomination 5 DOLLARS appears in the lower field. The design is enclosed by a beaded border along the coin's inner rim.

附加信息

Part of a broader Cook Islands commemorative program exploiting the islands' liberal licensing arrangements to issue collector coins with no connection to local history or currency needs. Van Gogh died in July 1890 — two months after shooting himself in a wheat field near Auvers-sur-Oise — leaving an estate that included roughly 900 paintings sold for almost nothing during his lifetime. The irony of his image appearing on a precious-metal collectible retailing for multiples of face value would not have been lost on a man who relied almost entirely on his brother Theo's financial support.
