Two additional gladiators are depicted in combat in the middle ground, set against an intricately rendered stone arena wall, conveying the atmosphere of the Roman amphitheatre. The entire composition is framed by an ornamental border, rendered in high relief with antiqued surfaces that enhance the sculptural depth and historical character of the design. The secutor was developed specifically to counter the retiarius — a net-and-trident fighter whose long-range tactics exploited the weaknesses of heavier gladiatorial types. The secutor's smooth, close-faced helmet with minimal eye openings was designed to prevent the net from catching, at the cost of severely restricted vision and ventilation. Bouts rarely lasted long for a different reason: the secutor could overheat and suffocate within minutes.
Solomon Islands has issued an extensive run of antiquity-themed bullion and collector rounds under the "Gladiator" series. KM#618 is part of that program.
