The retiarius was the most recognizable — and most socially despised — fighter in the Roman arena. Armed with net, trident, and dagger but no helmet, he was uniquely exposed to the crowd's gaze, which Roman writers associated with effeminacy and low status. Seneca and Juvenal both used the type as shorthand for degradation. That cultural freight makes him one of the more intellectually interesting gladiatorial subjects to find commemorated on a Pacific island coin issued under a British monarch.
