Cook Islands has issued commemorative five-dollar silver rounds under its own authority since the 1970s, a arrangement that persists because the islands retain the right to produce legal tender coinage independently of New Zealand despite using the New Zealand dollar in daily commerce. The program has become one of the more prolific commemorative licensing operations in the Pacific, with designs contracted to external mints — primarily in Europe — rather than struck domestically.
The KM#3259 assignment places this among a very large body of similar issues catalogued in that range.
