The mountain boomer — more properly the collared lizard, Crotaphytus collaris — earned its folk name from the booming calls males produce during breeding season, though it is native to the American Southwest and has no geographic connection to the Cook Islands whatsoever. Cook Islands has operated one of the most prolific third-party bullion and commemorative programs in the Pacific since the 1970s, issuing coins under license for foreign distributors with no expectation of domestic circulation. This piece is a product of that arrangement.
