| Obverse description | The obverse displays the national coat of arms of the Republic of Liberia at center, featuring a shield bearing a sailing ship at sea, a palm tree, and a rising sun, flanked by scrolling drapery with the motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE inscribed on a ribbon across the upper portion of the shield. The date 1997 is divided on either side of the arms in the field. The circular legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs along the upper periphery, with a second inscription REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA appearing on a banner at the base of the arms, and the denomination 5 DOLLARS inscribed along the lower border.
