Hannibal Barca crossed the Alps in 218 BC with somewhere between 26,000 and 37,000 troops — ancient sources disagree sharply — losing nearly half his force to cold, ambushes, and terrain before reaching the Po Valley. He then went on to field an army that inflicted Rome's three worst battlefield defeats in a single war. Niue has become one of the busiest issuing authorities in the modern commemorative market, licensing its sovereignty to bullion programs with no organic connection to the subject matter.
