Tunisia's first gold coinage as an independent republic, this issue emerged from the Banque Centrale de Tunisie just seven years after France relinquished the protectorate. The without-flags variety distinguishes it from the earlier transitional type, reflecting a deliberate revision to the design shortly after initial production — the flags had carried associations with the independence movement that the newly consolidated Bourguiba government was quietly stepping back from in official iconography.
Struck to a fineness matching French Latin Monetary Union standards, almost certainly to ease acceptance in international settlement. The KM#321 designation covers both date varieties across the three-year production window.
