| Obverse description | The Costa Rican national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting three snow-capped volcanoes rising above a valley flanked by the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, with two sailing vessels in the bays and a rising sun on the horizon. A garland of seven stars arches above the shield, representing the seven provinces of the republic.
