| Beschrijving voorzijde | The Costa Rican national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting three volcanic peaks above a blue sea with two merchant vessels, one on each side, beneath a rising sun; the scene is enclosed within an oval cartouche flanked by nine stars representing the seven provinces and framed by coffee and banana branches. A blue sky with a white star and the national colors appear above the mountains. The encircling legend reads REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA in the upper arc and AMERICA CENTRAL in the lower arc. Note: letter size and spacing between legends varies across different mintages and dies. |

Costa Rica's shift to copper-aluminium-nickel for this denomination in 1997 was driven by chronic devaluation of the colón through the 1980s and 1990s, which repeatedly eroded the practical value of the coin series and forced the Banco Central to reconsider alloy costs. The stainless steel predecessor had proven adequate but the new composition offered better corrosion resistance for tropical circulation conditions.
