The 'CENTS' designation on this type exists because of what happened immediately after the 'CENTS'-less version was released in early 1883. Con men gold-plated the new reedless nickels — which bore a large Roman numeral V with no denomination word — and passed them as five-dollar gold pieces. The Mint added 'CENTS' within months, mid-year 1883, to close the loophole.
The series ran until 1913, when the Buffalo Nickel replaced it. Five 1913 Liberty Nickels were struck clandestinely — almost certainly without Mint authorization — and all five are accounted for today. One sold at auction in 2010 for over $3.7 million.
