正面描述 The obverse carries a central portrait vignette of Spencer M. Clark, then Superintendent of the National Currency Bureau, whose likeness was controversially placed on this issue — a decision that prompted Congress to subsequently ban living persons from appearing on U.S. currency. The portrait is framed within an intricate lathe-work border, with denomination and legal tender inscriptions arranged in multiple registers across the note. The entire design was engraved and printed at the Treasury Department.

背面描述 The reverse is executed entirely in green ink and presents a dense guilloche surround of fine lathe-work forming a scalloped outer border, with large ornate numeral "5" counters at each corner rendered in scroll and filigree work. A central cartouche with a wavy foliate frame contains the redemption and legal tender text in an italic script, set against a lightly patterned microprint underprint.
背面铭文 Exchangeable for United States Notes by Assistant Treasurers & designated Depositaries of the United States in sums not less than Three Doll.s Receivable in payment of all dues to the United States, less than Five Dollars, Except Customs.
