| Reverse description | A naturalistic beaver, Canada's national animal, is depicted in profile seated on a log above the two-line inscription CANADA and the denomination 5 CENTS, with the date appearing in the lower field flanked by the initials K·G. A maple leaf device appears on each side of the central design, and the entire composition is contained within a smooth, unadorned field. The design, engraved by Thomas Shingles, is based on the original beaver motif introduced by Emanuel Hahn on the Canadian five-cent piece in 1937. |

| Additional information |
Canada's shift to nickel-plated steel for the five-cent piece came out of a straightforward cost calculation: the price of pure nickel had made the coin's metal content approach its face value. The magnetic property is the functional consequence of the steel core — vending machine operators required the change, since the new planchets behaved differently from the solid nickel pieces Canadians had used since 1955. Transitional sorting headaches were reported across the transit and retail sectors through the early 2000s.
