Obverse description Draped bust of George Washington facing right, with flowing queue tied with a ribbon, occupying the central field. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST arcs along the upper periphery, flanking the effigy on both sides, while the date 1866 appears in the lower exergual area. A bold dentilated border frames the entire design. The portrait reflects a neoclassical treatment consistent with Longacre-era engraving practice.
Obverse script Latin

Reverse description A large numeral 5 dominates the central field, surrounded by a closed laurel wreath tied at the base. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA encircles the design along the upper and lower periphery. A dentilated border frames the reverse, consistent with the obverse treatment. The overall design is bold and emblematic, characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century United States pattern coinage.
