| 裏面の説明 | A large Roman numeral V dominates the central field, flanked by an open agricultural wreath composed of corn, cotton bolls, and oak leaves tied with a ribbon bow at the base. The national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM arcs along the upper rim above the wreath. The entire design is contained within a fine dentilated border. |

The 1882 pattern nickels were produced during an active period of experimental coinage, when the Mint was exploring both design alternatives and alloy substitutions ahead of potential retooling. Judd-1684 through 1686 represent three distinct compositional trials struck from the same or closely related dies — the variation in metal mix was the experiment, not the design.
Aluminum trials from this period survive in tiny numbers, as the Mint melted most experimental pieces before they left official hands. Those that reached collectors typically did so through the sanctioned — if legally ambiguous — practice of Mint officers trading patterns to favored numismatists.
