Obverse description Left-facing effigy of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, her hair gathered in a bun with a small curl at the nape. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs along the upper rim, while the date 1869 is positioned at the lower rim. The portrait is rendered in the classical style characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century American coinage.

Reverse description A central Roman numeral V is enclosed within an agricultural wreath of corn, wheat, and oak. At the apex of the wreath, a small Maltese cross flanks the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, which arcs along the upper portion of the design. The composition is symmetrical and closely related to the regular-issue Shield nickel reverse of the period.
