Obverse description The obverse displays the national coat of arms of Costa Rica at center, featuring three volcanoes rising from the sea with a sailing vessel in the foreground, a rising sun above the peaks, and seven stars arranged in an arc at the top of the shield. The shield is flanked by ornate scrolled mantling. The circular legend REPUBLICA DE COSTA RICA runs along the upper periphery, while the date — flanked by two six-pointed stars — appears at the base of the coin.
