Comments

Cantina tokens issued by French prisoner-of-war depots during the First World War occupy a narrow and often overlooked corner of emergency scrip collecting. The Nevers depot operated under French military administration to house German and Austro-Hungarian prisoners, and its canteen vouchers — denominated in centimes rather than the franc units more common to civilian emergency issues of the same period — reflect the deliberately constrained purchasing environment of a camp economy. Prisoners could acquire small goods; the fractional denomination kept individual transactions trivial by design.

Paper camp scrip of this type was never intended to survive. Attrition rates were extreme.
