Struck to coincide with the quatercentenary of Columbus's first voyage, this issue was part of a broader Central American coinage reform that briefly aligned El Salvador's fractional silver with regional standards. The timing was deliberate — 1892 was marked across Latin America by government-sponsored commemorative programs, and El Salvador's treasury used the moment to push through updated specifications that had been debated for years.
Production ran across only two calendar years before the type was superseded.
