| Description de l’avers | Salmon-red and black letterpress note with a dense ornamental border of repeating geometric motifs framing the entire face. Two oval vignettes flank the central text field: at left, a view of the Wangen parish church with its distinctive tower, and at right, the Rathaus arcaded facade; both rendered in fine line engraving on a salmon underprint. The denomination "Fünf Millionen" is set in bold blackletter script at the top, with the issuing text, date "29. Aug. 1923", and manuscript signatures of the Oberamtmann and Oberamtspfleger centred below; the numeral "5.000.000" appears twice at the lower corners flanking the serial number. |

Wangen im Allgäu was a minor administrative district in Württemberg, and its Oberamtssparkasse — a savings institution tied to the district authority rather than a commercial bank — had no business printing currency. The hyperinflation of 1923 forced exactly that. By August of that year, the Reichsbank's own supply of emergency notes was failing to keep pace with demand, and local governments, municipalities, and district bodies across Germany issued Notgeld in denominations that would have been unthinkable eighteen months earlier.
Five million marks. Printed locally in Wangen, almost certainly on whatever press was available.
