| Descrizione del dritto | Printed in violet on cream paper, the obverse is dominated by a central rectangular vignette with an Art Nouveau-style underprint of stylised floral and foliate scrollwork, within which the denomination "Fünf Millionen Mark" is set in bold letterpress type. Below the denomination, a three-line text names the Kreiskommunalkasse and the Amts-, Gemeinde- und Sparkassen des Landkreises Bochum as payers, followed by the issue date "Bochum, den 16. August 1923" and the issuing authority. To the lower left of the vignette, outside the border, a black eagle vignette appears above the inscription "Landkreis Bochum", while a red serial number with prefix letter is printed vertically along the left margin. |

One of hundreds of Notgeld issues authorized by German district administrations during the hyperinflation of 1923, this note was issued by the Kreisausschuß — the district committee — of Landkreis Bochum, the rural administrative district surrounding the industrial city rather than the city itself. The distinction matters: Bochum city had its own separate issues, and confusing the two is common.
Five million marks sounds staggering, but by mid-1923 it was barely adequate for a week's groceries. Notes like this were printed and spent within days of issue, which is precisely why undamaged survivors are rarer than the high surviving quantities of city-issued Notgeld from the same period.
