The Gödöllő Artists' Colony was founded in 1901 by a group of Hungarian painters and applied artists who settled around the royal palace town northeast of Budapest, consciously modeling themselves on the English Arts and Crafts movement. Their centenary fell in 2001 — the direct occasion for this issue. The colony's leading figures, including Aladár Körösfői-Kriesch and Sándor Nagy, drew heavily on folk art traditions and Tolstoyan communal ideals, an unusual combination that gave the group a distinct character within European Art Nouveau.
The commemorative series of which this forms part was struck at the Magyar Pénzverő mint in Budapest.
