400 Euros Jheronimus Bosch 'El Bosco'

Issued to mark the 500th anniversary of Bosch's death, this coin reflects a broader Spanish cultural claim on the painter — he has been called "El Bosco" in Spanish since at least the sixteenth century, when Philip II acquired an obsessive collection of his work that remains largely intact at the Prado and El Escorial. Philip reportedly kept The Garden of Earthly Delights in his personal chambers at El Escorial until his death in 1598.

Bosch himself was Netherlandish, born in 's-Hertogenbosch around 1450 — the Spanish connection is entirely a product of Habsburg collecting appetite.
