| 表面の説明 | Facing bust of Christopher Columbus occupying the central field, rendered in finely engraved relief with detailed curling hair and a plain collar visible at the truncation. An astrolabe is depicted to the lower left of the effigy, symbolising Columbus's navigational expertise. The legend ESPAÑA arcs along the upper left field, with the date 2006 inscribed below it. The coin border features a decorative scalloped or beaded inner rim framing the entire design. |

Issued as part of Spain's ongoing commemorative gold program, this piece belongs to a series the Real Casa de la Moneda produced throughout the 2000s marking figures central to Castilian imperial history. Columbus himself remains a contested figure in Spanish numismatic commemoration — his Genoese birth has periodically complicated official narratives, though the 1492 commission under Isabella I of Castile has always given Spain unambiguous claim to the voyage's sponsorship.
The 400-euro denomination was used almost exclusively for high-value collector issues in this period, never intended for circulation.
