| 正面描述 | Full-length frontal effigy of Emperor Tiberius III standing erect, crowned and robed in a long imperial loros or tunic. The emperor holds an elongated cross sceptre in his right hand and a globus cruciger in his left, emblematic of Christian imperial authority. The figure is rendered in the flat, hieratic style characteristic of late Byzantine provincial coinage. |

Tiberius III seized the throne in 698 after leading the Byzantine counterattack against the Arab forces that had just taken Carthage — the fall of which effectively ended Roman Africa for good. His coins from Syracuse reflect the western minting operations that continued even as Constantinople struggled to respond to the catastrophic loss of the Exarchate of Africa.
Syracuse remained the dominant mint in Byzantine Sicily throughout his reign, supplying copper to a region increasingly isolated from the eastern court.
