Obverse description Frontal facing bust of Emperor Tiberius III, crowned and cuirassed, wearing a crown surmounted by a cross. The emperor holds a spear over his right shoulder and supports a decorated shield at his left side. A star appears in the left field. The bust is rendered in the stylized late Byzantine manner typical of Syracusan provincial issues, with flat, schematic facial features characteristic of the period.

Reverse description Large denomination numeral M (40 nummi) dominates the center of the flan in bold relief. An upright palm branch flanks the M to the left and a second upright palm branch flanks it to the right, a characteristic decorative device of the Syracusan mint. A cross-shaped monogram appears above the M in the upper field. The design follows the standard Byzantine follis reverse layout adapted for the Syracuse mint under Tiberius III.
