Obverse description Facing busts of Emperor Phocas and Empress Leontia, both nimbate, standing side by side: Phocas on the left holding a globus cruciger in his right hand, Leontia on the right holding a cruciform scepter. A cross appears above and between the two imperial figures, emphasizing the Christian character of Byzantine coinage. Both figures are rendered in the frontal hieratic style characteristic of early Byzantine numismatic art. The obverse legend, disposed around the figures in Latin, identifies the emperor by his titles.
