Reverse description The reverse features the large Greek numeral M (denoting 40 nummi, the value of one follis) prominently displayed in the centre of the field, surmounted by a cross. To the left of the M appears the regnal year notation ANNO with the corresponding numeral, and to the right the officina letter. Below the M, a horizontal exergual line separates the mint signature NIKO (for Nicomedia). The design is executed in the standard Anastasian reformed follis format, with bold, well-spaced characters in the characteristic late Byzantine epigraphic style.
