Obverse description Frontal bust of Emperor Maurice Tiberius, helmeted and cuirassed, facing the viewer directly in the hieratic Byzantine imperial style. The emperor wears a plumed helmet with a diadem, and his cuirass is decorated with pteryges visible at the shoulders. He holds a globus cruciger in his right hand and a shield or eagle-tipped sceptre in his left, both emblems of imperial authority. A partial Latin legend runs along the periphery of the flan, though partially obscured by the irregular flan edges. The portrait is rendered in the characteristic flat, stylized manner of late 6th-century Byzantine coinage.
