Obverse description Facing bust of Emperor Maurice Tiberius, wearing a crown surmounted by a cross and consular loros robes, shown frontally in the hieratic Byzantine imperial style. The emperor holds a mappa in his right hand and an eagle-tipped sceptre in his left, rendered in low relief characteristic of late 6th-century Byzantine coinage. The legend DN MAVRIC TIBER P P AV (Dominus Noster Mauricius Tiberius Pater Patriae Augustus) runs around the periphery in Latin capitals. The overall style reflects the stylised, frontal portraiture typical of the Constantinople mint under Maurice Tiberius.
