| Obverse description | Frontal bust of Emperor Mauricius Tiberius facing, helmeted with a plumed helmet adorned with a diadem, wearing consular robes with a decorated loros; the emperor holds a cross-tipped scepter in his right hand and a mappa or globus in his left. Pendilia hang from either side of the helmet, framing the imperial visage in characteristic late antique Byzantine style. The legend D N MAVRCI P P AVG (Dominus Noster Mauricius Perpetuus Augustus) runs in the field to the left and right of the bust in Latin characters. The overall rendering is frontal and hieratic, consistent with the stylized portraiture of sixth-century Byzantine coinage struck at Constantinople. |

Maurice's early reign was financially strained by the ongoing war with Persia inherited from Tiberius II, and copper folles of this period show considerable variation in fabric and weight as the Constantinople mint struggled to maintain consistent output. The fiscal pressure would only worsen — by 588, unpopular pay cuts triggered a full mutiny among the Danubian armies.
BCV 493 places this issue within the first regnant years before the mint's officina system was fully regularized under Maurice's administration.
