Reverse description Large denomination mark M (numeral for 40 nummi) occupies the center of the field, surmounted by a cross above and flanked by the regnal inscription ANNO to the left and the year numeral I to the right. A Greek officina letter epsilon (ε) appears between the legs of the M, indicating the fifth workshop. The mint signature CON (for Constantinopolis) is inscribed in the exergue, identifying the mint of Constantinople.
