Mauricius Tiberius inherited a treasury gutted by his predecessor Tiberius II Constantine, who had financed popularity through grain doles and tax relief he couldn't afford. The Antioch mint — operating here under its Greek name Theoupolis, "City of God," following a 528 earthquake and imperial refoundation — was one of the empire's most productive eastern facilities during this reign, supplying coinage to armies fighting simultaneously on the Persian and Balkan frontiers. That two-front pressure defines why this issue exists in such volume.
The DOC range of 152–160 reflects meaningful die variation across the reign's nine years, with regnal year notations on the reverse allowing reasonably precise dating within the sequence.
