| Obverse description | Facing bust of Emperor Justinian I, helmeted and wearing elaborate imperial regalia including a decorated cuirass with a tablion panel visible at center. The emperor holds a globus cruciger in his right hand, with a cross to the left and right of the bust flanking the figure symmetrically in the field. The imperial portrait is rendered in the frontal hieratic style characteristic of sixth-century Byzantine coinage from the Ravenna mint. The surrounding circular legend reads D N IVSTINIANVS P P AVG, identifying the emperor as Dominus Noster Justinianus Perpetuus Augustus. |
