| Reverse description | The large Greek numeral M, denoting 40 nummi (one follis), dominates the center of the reverse, surmounted by a cross. To the left of the M appears the regnal year notation ANNO in two lines, and to the right the corresponding Roman numeral year (e.g. ANNO XXↅIII for year 29 of Justinian's reign). The officina letter Γ (third workshop) is placed in the lower center between the legs of the M. In the exergue, the mint signature τHЧϱ identifies the Antioch mint, known ecclesiastically as Theopolis. The overall design is bold and utilitarian, typical of Byzantine large bronze coinage of the Justinianic period. |
