Obverse description Emperor Justinian I depicted full-length, enthroned facing, wearing imperial loros and crown with pendilia. In his right hand he raises a long sceptre, while his left hand supports a globus cruciger, symbolising universal Christian sovereignty. The figure is rendered in the flat, hieratic style characteristic of early Byzantine coinage, seated upon a high-backed throne with footstool visible below. The circumferential legend D N IVSTINIANVS P P AVG runs around the periphery, partially obscured by flan irregularity. A dotted border frames the design.
