The emperor holds a spear in his right hand, the figure rendered in the flat, hieratic style characteristic of late Byzantine bronze coinage. The flan is irregular and the striking somewhat weak, as typical of Syracuse mint issues of this period. |

The mint signature SCL appears in the exergue or field, identifying the Syracuse mint. |
