Anastasius I's currency reform of 498 AD was one of the most consequential fiscal decisions in Byzantine history — the reintroduction of large-denomination bronze coinage after decades in which the follis had effectively collapsed into near-worthless tiny flans. The 40-nummi piece, marked with the Greek numeral M, was the cornerstone of that reform, giving everyday transactions a functional medium that the preceding coinage had failed to provide.
The Antioch mint was one of four major eastern workshops activated to meet demand. Early Anastasian issues from this mint are distinguished by their relatively crude module and die alignment inconsistencies — a product of the speed at which production was scaled.
