Frederik IV ascended the Danish-Norwegian throne in 1699, and coinage issued in the opening years of his reign reflects the administrative machinery of a dual monarchy still digesting the territorial losses of the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde. Norway retained its own mint at Christiania, operating with a degree of independence from Copenhagen, which accounts for the distinct Norwegian references in the catalog sequence for this type.
The 1699–1700 window is narrow. Frederik IV's early coinage was soon disrupted by the outbreak of the Great Northern War in 1700, which reshuffled fiscal priorities across Scandinavia and curtailed normal mint operations.
