Obverse description Draped bust of Liberty facing left with flowing hair, wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. The metrology legend encircling the upper rim reads 6G .3S .7C 7GRAMS, denoting the alloy composition of the proposed coinage standard, interspersed with five-pointed stars. The date 1880 appears at the lower rim. The overall design is executed in the flowing-hair Stella style attributed to engraver Charles Edward Barber.

Reverse description A large five-pointed star dominates the central field, bearing the inscriptions ONE, STELLA, a decorative scroll, 400, and CENTS arranged vertically within the star's surface. The national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and the religious motto DEO EST GLORIA encircle the star in the middle field. The outer legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA occupies the upper rim, while FOUR DOL. appears at the lower rim, denoting the coin's face value of four dollars.
